The Superfood Sneaking into your Gin

We’d be the first to admit that a good gin can make you feel a lot better, both mentally and physically.

And if we’re going to be technical about it, then gin does contain quite a lot of vegetation, so we can be reminded we need to get our five a day with every sip we take.

But never before have we been able to proudly say that our Gin of the Month contains an actual superfood, which has been cited as a cancer fighting ingredient as well as a preventative resource for lots of other health problems.

Black Tomato Gin is made with a new breed of botanical. One that has been recognised and celebrated for its health benefits, earning it the superfood title.

Black tomato itself is a vegetable (or fruit if we’re going to be picky about it) which has a far darker skin that a regular tomato. It ripens to a colour that might be called blue, purple or black, and with the darker pigment comes a major health benefit.

The darker the skin, the more anthocyanins it contains – a special antioxidant that helps your body to fight off toxins and keep you healthy.

While we wouldn’t dream of citing gin as a miracle health cure, we’re very excited about it popping up in our favourite spirit, which also has 100% organic ingredients.

The distillers behind Black Tomato Gin have chosen its contents carefully. It’s made of water from the Oosterschelde estuary in the Netherlands, the largest national park in the country, giving it a pleasant saltiness reminiscent of the Bruinisse harbour it comes from.

This small fishing village is normally more well known for producing mussels, but now master distiller Meindert Kampen is hoping his homegrown black tomatoes and traditional distilling process will help to change that.

If all this gin does is give you a wonderful new drink to try, and raises your awareness of the wonders of black tomatoes, we’ll consider it a job well done.

For the perfect serve of this stunning superfood spirit, you’ll also need fresh basil, ice cubes and tonic water.
