Now gin might not be the first alcoholic beverage that you would think is made of wheat (beer being the most obvious) but many gins are made with a grain base spirit or use it another stage of production; sometimes it’s just not worth taking that risk.
Many coeliac groups recommend not drinking spirits with a grain base. That said, this amount of gluten is very much something that impacts individuals differently. You can be a coeliac and be absolutely fine with gin (and whisky), whilst some other people won't be.
With gluten being a real problem for many people, we thought we’d better find some gluten-free gins, after all, we don’t want anybody missing out on the good stuff!
First of all,we have Pinkster! A small batch, premium gin created because the distiller had a wheat allergy but didn’t want to give up his beloved tipple! Raspberry is one of the key botanicals in this drink but it’s not overtly sweet; a smooth, dry gin with a touch of fruitiness (the raspberry is noticeable but not dominant) balanced by a slight sharpness from the juniper. Try it with mint and raspberries! The greatest combo of garnishes I ever see.
The entirety of William’s Chase range of spirits, both gins and vodkas are gluten-free! Rather than the neutral grain spirit that is used by most distilleries, Chase use their own apple and potato based spirits as the starting point for their gins. The Extra Dry, as the name so subtly suggests, is a deliciously dry gin with hints of dark chocolate and cinnamon spice. Their Elegant Crisp Gin is full-bodied and fruity, the apple base is present but not overpowering. Their third, fabulous gin is the Seville Orange: brilliantly rounded orange, well tempered by the juniper with just a hint of elderflower. Fabulous over ice!
Chilgrove Gin use a grape base for their gin - a very traditional gin, with traditional botanicals, the grape base brings this gin into a class of it’s own. A complex set of flavours, ranging from citrus to floral and back to light spice, this really is the gin for all seasons!
VII Hills, the Italian London Dry, is another gluten-free gin, thanks to its sugar-beet base. Using a fantastic range of botanicals, it is a smooth and aromatic gin, with the juniper (as in all true London Drys) as the strongest flavour, there are wonderful nuances and flavours of citrus orange and vanilla nectar notes as well as peppery fennel and bay leaf on the finish.
Hendrick’s, the gin that introduced many of us to the idea that gin wasn’t purely sharp and juniper-y and the shocking revelation that it could be garnished with more than ice and a slice, is another gluten-free gin. Aromatic with a touch of sweetness, this is a great Scottish gin.
